Symptoms/Clues to Clinical Depression and Possible Suicide

Depression has often been called the "common cold of western society" by researchers and clinicians because of its prevalence. This workshop will assist the clinician in identifying clients who may have a clinical depression or may be at risk for suicide.  A variety of tools including pertinent tests, case studies, guest speakers, experiential exercises etc. will be utilized to present salient information.

Name: John Ostwald

Bio:

John R, Ostwald is an educator/ trainer and clinician who has worked in the field of chemical dependency since 1975. He has served on the facilities of Brooklyn College, Hofstra University, the College of Staten Island and Nassau Community College. His work has been presented at national conferences, numerous health care facilities and on radio and television. John has been referred to as an expert in the field of sexuality by MS Magazine.

 

John’s unique combination of expertise in sexuality and chemical dependency has developed through a variety of educational and vocational experiences. Following completion of graduate school he studied sexuality in Europe through New York University. While living in New York City, his work experiences included facilitating groups for people with AIDS, a private practice in psychotherapy and sexuality therapy, consulting at drug treatment centers and various administrative positions in human service agencies. 

Currently, John is an Associate Professor at Hudson Valley Community College, where he teaches a variety of courses in Psychology, as well as a columnist for The Record newspaper in Troy.  John is a Vietnam era veteran who studied PTSD with Dr. Edward Tick, internationally known for his work with traumatized veterans.  This study included a recent trip to Vietnam
