Understanding the Addictive Process
This presentation will explore what an addiction is. It will help participants gain a better understanding of the disease process of addiction and how it impacts a person's ability to be open to treatment. The addiction cycle and short term gratification, addictive thinking and increased tolerance will be explored. Participants will look at the biopsychosocial model and be able to describe how this impacts on all aspects of a person's life.

Bio:
Michael Barbarulo is a noted, well-credentialed and trained professional in the field of addictions, emotional, behavioral and personality disorders. Mike is currently the Associate Executive Director of Ministries for the City Mission of Schenectady.
He has spent the last 17 years as a teacher, counselor, therapist and Life Coach working with adults, adolescents, homeless men/women and the criminal justice population. Michael specializes in anger, depression and anxiety (stress) management, relapse prevention, addiction, gambling, denial management, behavior modification/management. He holds certifications in all these areas and is also a Certified Life Strategy Coach & Executive Coach, and Certified Anger Management Facilitator (Anderson & Anderson). Michael specializes in working with rage-aholics. Michael is a consultant for several churches in the capital district of New York. He is also a NAADAC (The Association for Addiction Professionals) Approved Education Provider # 648 (www.naadac.org) Michael is also an OASAS Education and Training Provider #0787 (www.oasas.state.ny.us/training/providers.cfm). Michael also provides a Drinking Driving Program for New York State Department of Motor Vehicle # 2700. Michael is currently working on his Ph.D. in Counseling and Human Services (12 courses completed).
